Dianne Mercier: championing NH’s nonprofits

When this bank president was a young, single mom, nonprofits helped her family and helped her build a career. Now she is a tireless champion for the nonprofit sector

Dianne Mercier understands exactly how important New Hampshire’s nonprofits are to families.

Dianne is president of People’s United Bank now. She got some critical help getting there.

When she was a young, single mom, she worked full-time at a bank and went to school at night.

“The Boys and Girls Club saved my family,” she said. “Not just my kids. They made my future possible.” How? By providing before- and after-school care, snow-day care and summer camp — with homework club, mentoring and enrichment activities. Dianne could get her degree and cultivate a career that would provide for her family — knowing that her kids were thriving.

Dianne is a champion for the nonprofit sector. She raises money for the Boys and Girls Club and serves on multiple nonprofit boards. She is a member of the New Hampshire Tomorrow Leadership Council, helping to guide the Charitable Foundation’s initiative to increase opportunities for New Hampshire’s kids. And she is vice president of the People’s United Community Foundation, which has aligned its grantmaking with New Hampshire Tomorrow.

When Dianne was working her way up, a nonprofit had her back — and her kids’ backs.

Now she has theirs.

Hamza Abdulrahman is attending college with help from a Foundation scholarship. His scholarship is from the Elizabeth I. Bickel Scholarship fund — which was created by a woman whose own family had emigrated to America, and always found ways to help the next waves of immigrants following behind them.

How the expanded child tax credit helped NH families

The expanded child tax credit helped move millions of American children out of poverty.
The Foundation, through a partnership with national funders and NH Housing, made grants to a number of nonprofit organizations in New Hampshire that were doing outreach to families to let them know about their eligibility for the credit — and to help them apply.

Foundation opposes bill that threatens resident-owned communities

Since 1984, the Charitable Foundation has invested in the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund to help residents of manufactured home parks organize, buy, and manage their communities as cooperatives. When these homeowners own the land and run their communities cooperatively, benefits include security of tenure, long-term affordability, stable costs, leadership engagement, improving conditions, and access to fixed-rate mortgages for home financing.
We oppose SB210 because we believe this bill, intentionally or not, will severely undermine a critical, innovative, and market-driven avenue to advance housing affordability.

Volunteer income-tax preparers urgently needed

Volunteering in this effort means helping families with children move out of poverty: Research from Columbia University estimated that the expanded child tax credit alone kept 3.8 million children out of poverty in November 2021 — which translates to a 30 percent dip in the overall child poverty rate in the U.S.
